Framed 18th century Italian gold leaf angel head 'putto' wall relief sculpture with burgundy velvet and adorned with rubies and garnets.

There is a halo of rubies and garnets around the head and the angel 'putto' was sculpted from papier-mâché. It is mounted on the original burgundy velvet and frame. The frame is adorned with natural-cut garnets. A Putto is a cherub figure frequently appearing in both mythological and religious paintings and sculpture, especially of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

Papier-mâché became very popular in Italy in both periods and is especially well-known in Puglia which is famous for the papier-mâché art. The angel face was created from gold leaf papier-mâché which signifies that it was an important piece. Together, the piece creates a historically significant yet contemporary work to grace any wall or space.
