Agatized Coral, Florida's State stone, began as living coral reef 40 million years ago in the shallow seas over Florida. The fossil coral is described as a chalcedony (agate) pseudo morph after coral formed in the Oligocene-Miocene Hawthorn Group Formations from the skeleton of tiny ocean animals.
